PostSubject: Dictator Diaries v1.1 (Tropico 3 Challenge)   Sat Nov 21, 2009 9:58 am

I have spent the last two days working on making this challenge for Tropico 3. Most of the online challenges I see people make are VERY limited. They are usually something as simple as get X amount of OIL by this time, and they are way too easy. And in fact, many people complain Tropico 3 is WAY too easy. Well, I found a way to make the game MUCH more enjoyable as well as adding enough challenge to make it fun to play, and replay! And in fact, there are two main paths you go choose as far as picking the US or the USSR as your backing power. But there are many different paths you can take on each of the routes, and you will want to play both sides to get all of the story behind what is really going on in the world.

The interesting thing is that I am using wiki to add the events to the game! I am using real world events to trigger in game reactions to the events, and then allowing the player to decide how to handle each of these paths. The game starts near the end of WW2 in 1945 and ends around 2012 or so. This is going to be an epic scenario in length, and so far I have just made it to about the mid 1960's. One problem I have is that I have to play through the game and make sure it is hard but not impossible on both sides, and keep checking for mistypes and such. I could maybe use some betatesters if anyone else has Tropico 3 or is about to buy it anyways. Playing through both sides takes quite a bit of time, so the more help I can get with testing, the faster I can get done with at least making the game last until 2012 or so. But yeah, I am going to get back to it, I have much work to do, but if anyone is interested, please let me know! Thanks!

Interested as long as it's not another "throw some rebels at the dictator" every couple months/years challenge. I think most of the challenges provided thus far are exactly that or they fall into the realm of gather 10,000 [insert product name here] within xx years, both of which bore me back to playing sandbox games.

Yes that is exactly why I decided to understake this project. It has been massive I have so many hours into it right now and it is likely only 1/3rd done hehe. But the help of BETA testers will save me much time in running through the game as well as give me other sources of feedback as each person has different play styles. I will say I refined my custom avatar for this one depending on the US or USSR approach. I need playthroughs on both sides to get data to know what to refine or catch some silly typo I missed. I think you will be pleased with what i have so far, I am going to pop into Tropico 3 now and copy the game i have now and have it end in the year 1965 instead of 2012 since it will be a beta release. But I think even with that 25 year run as it is, its pretty good, and will have people begging for the ending to be added hehe. But again, this one is hard but in a fun way. I hate all the get X amount of THIS in THAT amount of time, or just oh crap rebels lol. I will say there are rebels but there are other concerns, economy, foreign agents and or invasions, dimplomacy is key as this is going to be a REAL life simulator of the time frame.

Anyways, sent you the private message and am off to upload the BETA now.

I hunger for T3 challenge!!! I am a keen tester. At least I'm good at whining. Have any of you guys played Civ4 Ryes and fall or whatever that addon was called. I'm kinda expecting something similar here where staying in power requires every possible asset to be in use and in use effectively while forcing the player to make some major, game-changing (or breaking) decisions other than 'how many factories do I want here?'

Ramble ramble, just let me at it Very Happy

hehe sounds like you guys are just what I am looking for. Yesterday I got the BETA uploaded, the campaign currently runs about 22 years for each side that you pick ( for a total of 44 years of different gameplay if you will. Each side has many different paths you can choose. It has the Civ4 type feel that the last poster was hoping to see Wink I am limited to what the module will allow me to add to the game, however it there are ALOT of variables to toy with, and I play with them all Smile

To help test it, do ONLINE challenges and scroll to the next page until you find Dictator Diaries. Version 1.2 is the newest one that ends in 22 years, version 1.1 had a typo I caught and ended in 2012, so I suggest you try v1.2 as I don't have any events for the later half of the scenario just yet. When you play it, please provide a report here if you will such as what you tried, how you faired, and also if you notice a typo or perhaps a variable that is off (such as you click an option that costs 5K and it charges you 10k or something silly like that, please post here and say WHEN, and WHAT happened, such as NOV 1954 on the USSR path I had THIS happen. All this data will help me tweak the module and can allow me to spend more time adding to the scope and length of the challenge. I actually have a few ideas of how it will end that should be interesting, as well as you will want to play both sides to get the WHOLE story as both super powers are trying to make you their puppet Smile

Brilliant challenge, easily the best I've played. Unfortunately I was playing the 1.1 version without the early ending so it just trailed off for me.
I played on the USSR's side and noticed a couple of problems:
When the drunk KGB agent offers you free housing it has a delayed effect and gives you two apartment blocks (I think the option tells you it will give you three tenements and surely it should be immediate)
The event where the KGB want to kill or kidnap Jews on the island seems to have no effect when the killing option is chosen (This could have just been my population not having anybody who would have been killed or something)
The February 1960 earthquakes don't work properly. First, all of the messages come up at once (Telling you about the quake, how it wasn't very big, how there's another big one coming and how the last one was very big) and then you get both quakes at once.
This last one could have just been me or a problem with the way challenges work but when there's 'men in suits' causing trouble on the island, the events come before the messages telling you that things are about to happen.

I hope you're still working on this, I'm looking forward to the continued challenge.
